Back To Your Regularly Scheduled Knitting Blog..

Yes.. it's time to talk about knitting again... No more hurricane talk... no more talk about traffic or trailers or moms being crazy with worry.

My package from eBay was here when we got home tonight... Just sitting there.. waiting... lonely.. covered in bubble wrap. So I let them out..

I feel better as a knitter now that I have more of an assortment of crochet hooks. Allthough I still feel guilty for being so picky about them. They work great though.. I already began the edging on my Voli.. I think I'm going to continue on with it.. I'm liking how it's turning out.

What I'm not so sure I like is how my arms look while I'm wearing the shirt... It's weird.. I looked at myself in the mirror and my tiny arms were looking more..... muscular than usual. Totally strange.. I know that's a weird complaint.. and maybe totally unfounded.. but I also notice that my arms look really.. LONG.. in it too.. And hey.. it's not really the shirt's fault... I do have really long gangly arms.. but ya know.. whatever. lol.

I'm not frogging again.. I'll wear it.. It looks nice.. I like the stripes and I like the feel of it..

I just might wear it with a jacket..

No harm in that is there?

In other knitting news.. I got to the arm hole bindoffs on my Ribby2.. It got a little touch and go when I was trying to figure out exactly how to go about doing it... Considering that the pattern isn't written to be knitted the way I am knitting it.. but tomarrow when I get my camera out of our luggage I'll post a picture of my progress.

I actually had to frog a few rows... I had knitted a half inch too much before the bindoffs... I thought I was being so careful too.. but those really loooooong rows make you feel like you'll never get there so you don't worry about obsessively measuring every other row. I should have known better.

But it's all good now.

I'm really sleepy and I'm going to have to revert back to school mode in atleast two days... so the knitting may slow down a tad.

...I still keep meaning to get one more swatch done for the vinegar test... I really should do that.

..But we'll see if I actually do it. Lol.

For Brad's Mum..

Hey : )

I sent an email to both your hotmail account and your account at home.. if you have a laptop that you're using to read this you should be able to check your hotmail on it too..

Mom is totally fine.. the power came back on there at about 9PM or so.. The reason she didn't answer when yall called is because the power was out and that means the phones don't work. (We have this weird phone system that goes through our cable modem.. so if the power goes out the modem goes out too.) The answering machine yall heard was actually voice mail.. so taht's why that works even when the phone doesn't.

Nothing bad happened to the house down there but the power did go out for most of today.

Don't know if I'll be up when you get home.. 4AM is kinda late.. but we'll see.

The email I sent you is really long though.. so hopefully that'll be good enough if we're sleeping.

Oh.. and school doesn't start again till Wednesday.. so I don't see a need for us to head back anytime soon. Even though they've said they're scheduling the return of people.. people aren't listening and the roads are clogged again. We're not gettin out in that again. I refuse.

Anyway... if you want us to call you reverse charges we will.. Just let us know. We love all of you over there!

Back in Dad's Trailor..

Well we're back where we belong.. We're very thankful that we're safe and that the storm seems to be over (99% sure.. but you know that crazy weather.)

Today the power came back on at about 5:30PM... Lucky too cause it was startin to get kinda hot... Thankfully Ray's wife made us lunch.. Never has PB&J tasted so good..

So about the roof... The corner of Ray's roof (his house, not the guest house we were in) got pushed up by the wind.. Brad says it looks like an opened can of sardines. Under the roof was Ray's home office.. that's pretty wet now. But he says he's got good insurance and isn't worried about it. No one was in that room when it happend or anytime durring the storm.. So no one got hurt.

We're all fed, clothed, dry, and cool. All good things. I'm glad I had the forethought to remember that my cellphone can post here.. It's been handy for not only my friends, but Brad's family in Australia. They've been SO worried about us!

I've knitted a few rows.. but not nearly as much as I thought I would... I probably will more in the next few days now that I don't have to worry about finding shelter or where food is gonna come from. It's also hard to knit when the power is out. lol!

I personally had a rough night last night.. Brad slept like a log, but I woke up about every 30 mintues when the wind would howl or something would hit our roof (Branches I guess.)

No trees uprooted or fell over thankfully. There were quite a few downed branches though.. nothing major..

..Well.. exept for that poor roof. lol.

Dad's trailor made it through amazingly well! Ray says we should be glad we weren't in it though cause when the wind was going this thing was rocking pretty hard.. But it didn't fall over and nothing fell off the walls or out of the cabinets.. It must be pretty well built.. But I still wouldn't want to be in it durring a storm like that. It's just good that dad has a home to come home to.. And we'll be here when he gets here.. He says he likes coming home to us. (Aww!!!)

So I guess that's all the news that is the news... Now all I gotta worry about is finding out when my school is back in session.

..Wooo fun.

Made It Through

The weather got pretty crazy but we're fine. Ray lost part of his roof. They're ok. Lots of broken treelimbs.

Relocating..

Well the time has come.. the wind is picking up a little so we're puttin all our stuff and food and gettin into Ray's guest house... Should be fine.. but no more computer.. Only cellphone.. I'm keeping it charged up as long as we have power.. so that shouldn't be an issue

I better go..

Change in Plans..

Well now I can write a longer update... As I said we're currently at dads.. but the change is.. we're staying here.. It would be impossible for us to get to Mammy's... not only is traffic a nightmare (really.. that doesn't even cover it.) but no one can get any gas anywhere.. so I'm afraid we'd run out and get stranded where no one would be able to help us..

So we're staying put and taking the neccesary steps to stay safe here... Dad will be at work when the storm hits (policeman.. no choice : / ) but his friend Ray will be helping us stay safe.. Ray has said that we'll stay in his house's apartment (He had it built for when family visits.. it's like a guest house really.) durring the storm.. which is good cause it's well built and has few windows. Ray is a super nice guy.. I'm glad dad was able to find a friend like him.

We have food and some water.. and I have my knitting.. so we should be ok.. We're just waiting for the storm to hit and be over with...

I am already scared of traffic going home.. but I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

Thanks to all of you who care and have left comments for me.. I'm feeling a bit better now that we've gotten more north and we have a better plan going here than we had at home..

We'll just see what happens.. I'm glad I have my cellphone set up to post here.. even though they're short posts.. it's good to have a line to the outside world.. I just have to make sure to keep my phone charged.. lol.

Anyhow.. I guess that's about all yall need to know... I can't think of anything.. I just know I really need to have a real meal soon... I haven't since last night at about 12AM... I think.. maybe earlier than that.. All the hours/days have been merging together in my brain.. lol.

Can ya blame me?

We're Here

Finally at dad's.. Very tired.. Coolin off. Might eat somethin and go to sleep..

Hurricane Central..

Howdie..

I've decided to let this blog be my hurricane update site because I can update it from my cellphone with text messaging.. so as long as I can txt I can update here..

We're planning to leave here tonight to go to my dad's house.. then tomarrow (More than likely) we'll end up driving out to Mammy's which is around Lufkin.. so we should be safe.. We have all of our stuff packed in the car so we're just waiting for dad to say that 59 is clear enough for us to leave and then we'll leave..

I've never been through a hurricane before.. but I don't plan on sticking around to find out what it's like..

Poor Houston... *sigh* oh well.. We'll see whats left after it's over..

As for knitting.. I have all my knitting stuff in our car.. (Well.. my big stash is in our closit.. but all my important stuff is in the car.) I plan on knitting alot over the weekend... I may even just knit swatches if I can't see..

Hopefully it won't come to that.. but I'm planning on having lots of Ribby2 done by the time we come home..

That's all I can think of right now.. I've been so nervous all day... *shudder* I hate this.

I'm a Big Ole Party Pooper..

This is for April:

My 5th sentance of my 23rd post was: Hopefully atleast one of these'll work out with how much I have of each color.. (4 Sky blue, and 3 River Blue)

But I.. as a party pooper.. do not want to tag 5 people..

What is amusing about that is that I am STILL talking about that yarn.. That yarn became my Voli (and I think I may have enough for another, with reverse striping as the one I ended up making.)

Over the weekend I got three mini-swatches done.. I decided that to save time and bordom that I would knit swatches that are 16 sts wide, with 2 sts on each side in garter stitch to prevent some rolling.

I have learned things:

1. The darker blue does bleed a tiny bit, but does not change color in any way. (Atleast, not to the naked eye.. I do not have a microscope. lol.)
2. Knitting a swatchlet in 30 minutes is VERY gratifying.
3. Putting shine through the washer and dryer results in VERY soft feeling yarn, with minimal streaking of the light blue yarn. This is the method I may end up using.
4. Washing with Ivory soap seemed to be a little better than Woolite, but not much. The upside? Ivory is WAY cheaper than woolite.. so I may end up buying it from now on.

I have yet to try the vinegar.. I gave up knitting swatches in lue of doing some school work.. (I do phases: knitting, school, knitting, school. It seems to be working out.) but maybe I'll do one swatch tonight before bed.

I also made another Ebay purchase... I got a set of my favorite brand of crochet hooks so that I'll have the knitters arsenal that I really need. (It includes the size I think I need for my Voli edging.)

I have to admit though.. I feel a little dirty for having a crochet hook prefrence.. I do not crochet. Ever. I only use the hooks for knitting.. but I hate the shape of Boye crochet hooks.. I hate the shape so much that I gave up my only Boye crochet hook to the bathroom for pulling out nasty gooky hair from the drains. I am Highly and Substantially biased and attached to Susan Bates crochet hooks.. The shape is perfect.. (The Boye shape causes the loops to get all tiny before they go over the hook and then they get STUCK which makes me SO frustRATED.) Lionbrand smartly coppied the Susan Bates shape with their hooks.. but the Lionbrand plastic is STUPID and annoying.

That gold one is the gooky sink drain one... Ewww.

What is more annoying is that Wal*Mart no longer sells Susan Bates hooks.. they only sell friggin Boye hooks.. (Which I HATE.) so I thought we should go to JoAnns to get my hook, but Brad doesn't like driving there.. and then when we saw their shipping costs we decided to check out Ebay.

So 6 different Susan Bates hooks should be on their way to me shortly.. which is gonna be quite nice.

Knitting Complete..

The knitting on my Voli is complete... but that doesn't mean the work is over..

I even stole Liz's idea for the hem.. (Yes I added sewing a seam to a seamless garment.. shh!!) I'm really glad I did, the weight of the hem makes the shirt lay much better.. and gives me the illusion of hips! (Of which I have none.)

But I still need to work out my color bleeding/changing issues.. I'm going to knit a few swatches and see what happens with different things.. I've heard of vinegar setting dye.. so I might try that.. and I bought some Ivory dish soap to try instead of Woolite. Why Ivory dish soap? Because Clara washes her KR swatches in it! That's why! So I'm going to try a few things before I subject my shirt to the wash.. I'm also going to try throwing a swatch in the laundry... (This sounds like lots of swatches.. Ugh.) I should also swatch some of the darker blue too.. I have no idea what that yarn comes out like washed.

I'm also debating whether or not to add a single crochet edging to prevent the rolling... I don't like the rolling.. and I don't want to block this thing every time I wear it.. but I don't like crocheting either! lol!

I need to buy a new crochet hook.. I don't have one small enough to make a tight enough edge. Brad'll love that... : /

Oh.. and I have to weave in the ends..

...I'm not really done...

And I still have Ribby2 to work on! HA! And soon I'm going to have to start on Melanie's scarf if I want it done by Christmas time..

...Suddenly I'm feeling overwhelmed.

Better go knit some swatches... Anyone want to help?

Startin to Look Like Somethin Ain't it?

I even tried it on earlier and the neckline seems to be working out really well... Grumperina sure does know her patterns..

I had a bit of a meltdown when it came to casting on for the arm holes.. but I finnally figured out that I had to turn the work *around* to get it to work...

..Atleast.. I think that's how you're supposed to do it....

Ofcourse.. I haven't knitted on Ribby2 at all.. not since last Thursday while I was at work.. it's even in my bag mid-row... dangerous... I really should fix that.

I guess I really can't work on more than one project at once... but it really does make more sense for me to get my Voli finished.. I'd actually be able to wear it when I got it done... Ribby2 would be atleast 2 months away from wear... Not that I'm close to done or anything.. I'm just trying to rationalise putting the project off.. lol.

Anyway.. I like how it's turning out... I think once I complete the Voli I'll officially promote myself to "Intermediate Knitter".. Ooo.. fancy.

How do you decide what you are anyway? It's not like there is a list.. or a quiz or anything..

..I'm hungry....

I'll probably get to the stripes on my Voli tomarrow... Woo stripes!

So.. I broke my own rule.

Yes.. yes I did.. I cast on another project before I finished my current one.. I just couldn't help it.. I guess that this can be a type of experiment.. to see if I can handle doing two projects at once. (Ok.. so technically I have a "practice" sock waiting on DPNs for a toe.. shhh.)

I decided to forge ahead on my 'Voli..

Not lookin like much eh? Atleast I'm using the yarn from my failed honeymoon cami and I'm still going for the same color scheme as I decided for that top.. I'm hoping this time the top style and size will fit me better..

..If it doesn't.... who knows. (Froggilicious?)

I did email knitpicks about my problem with washing my swatches... We'll see if they respond.. I don't know if they will or not.. They seem to want phone calls rather than emails.. so if in a few days I don't get a response.. I'll see about calling them.

I guess it isn't really that big of a deal.. but I can't say I like it or that I'm pleased.

But I'm plugging along anyway. I guess the moral to the story is.. wash a swatch before you knit.. that way you can return yarn if you don't like how it came out.

Yep.. good moral.

...Now who's gonna waste time and yarn washing swatches?.. LOL.

Monday, September 05, 2005

Naw.. I think it's a Zeebra..

So I did actually knit last night.. a swatch for the now infamous 'Voli T, and I actually washed my swatch.. which I've never done before. (Yes. I know, Bad Kim.)

I can't say I'm pleased with the outcome. My gauge is perfect.. so I should be happy.. right?

..Wrong.

This is a picture of the swatch while it was wet and laying on the towel:

Do you see it? The stripes... Ugh. So I thought.. hey.. maybe when it dries it won't be a big deal..

..Wrong.

Granted, these two pictures were done in two different ways.. the second one is scanned in my scanner because I thought it would pick up the color changes better. But you can STILL see the stripes even though it's bone dry.

I'm not sure if it's a Knit Pick's Shine problem, a dye lot problem, or a problem with how I washed my swatch (In the sink, with Woolite.) but it is a problem none the less.. and I'm not sure how I feel about it.

I keep reading about this yarn being safe in the washing machine.. but if it did that in the sink.. how could it possibly make it through the washer?

It's not a HORRIBLE effect really.. it just isn't how I expected the yarn to look... Kinda sad.

I looked on the knitpicks website for an email address to send them this issue, but I could only find the webmaster's email for technical problems.. which this isn't exactly.. so I guess I'll have to call them tomarrow to talk to them about it >: |

I hate calling companies.

How do you run a web-business without a business email?

Maybe this shirt'll wash better in the washer.. maybe it'll all be ok...

All I can do is try.

Which I shall.

...Tonight.

Knitting on Paper..

Well.. to be entirely honest... I haven't knitted a stitch since Thursday... but I have been doing other knitting related things.. I've been pondering... and I've been working on a new notebook option for myself..

I even made a fancy graphic for the front of it... I think it's pretty nifty..

I've still got to develop what is going to go on inside that binder... I know I need to find some dividers.. but that's not so easy with a 8.5"x5.5" paper size.. I'm hoping this'll end up being better than what I have now though.. I really like the spiral I was using.. but not being able to move the pages around has gotten to be a bother.

I'm also pondering the Tivoli Tee... the pattern is finnally out at Magknits and I've already printed it out... I meant to swatch yesterday but for some reason I just didn't get to it.. I have to read that pattern a few times.. I'm not sure I completely understand what it means.. (Maybe I'm not quite an intermediate knitter?) but I'm hoping to figure it out.

My ribby body is about 10 inches long now.. It doesn't feel as slow as it once did.. maybe because I'm not doing ALL ribbing anymore.. Or maybe I've just gotten into the groove.

We went to Home Depot the other night and I asked the paint girl there about my box.. I don't think she was very knowledgeable about it because she said, "Well that just shouldn't have happened".. She didn't have any solution for me.. and couldn't help me. I half expected this though because it's a brand new Home Depot and I'm sure she's new to the job... I want to go back to the store I bought the paint at and ask them.. Maybe they'll know. What a bummer it all is.

I have to do some college coursework now.. so I'll probably want a knitting break later.. Here's hopin ; )
