Remember that "Something Weird"?
You know.. when you're knitting a secret project... it's really hard to keep up with a knitting blog..
Thankfully.. today the yarn arrived for Aunt Faye's gift... You know what that means?
I can blog again! Yay!!
So yes.. the yarn arrived... (After a huge to-do with the post office, I really hate them sometimes.) and the one type is SOOOOOOO soft I can't even believe it..

This is Knit Picks
Suri Dream in Lilac and
Sparkles in Lagoon.. (And a small hidden gift for me... darn the alure of the $30 dollar free shipping.)
Yes.. I just had to have the Yarn Harlot book.. It all started with me hearing her hotline to save the stressed holiday knitter... She is so funny. I can't wait to read that book. I think of it as a small "thank you" token for knitting this gift for Mammy to give to Aunt Faye.. (Boy that sounds weird.)
Anyway.. back to the yarn.. I love the colors that Sparkles turned out to be... it's really pretty.. I'm just a little frightened about how they'll go with that Suri yarn.. I fully intend to swatch and see what it turns out like.. but I'm hoping that even if they don't go the best the softness will win out.. (I'm telling you.. it's pet-the-bunny soft.)
Plus Aunt Faye really does like odd color combinations.
So we'll see what it turns out like.
Well I'm a doofus.. yall have no idea what I'm even gonna do with this stuff... I was searching on KnitPicks for yarns that I could use.. and this pattern came up and I thought Aunt Faye would really like it:

That's a free pattern from KnitPicks.. They call it the
Ocean Capelet. I picked it because while we were looking through knitting mags together she saw something similar to that and she said she weanted to make herself one.... But now I'm making it for her >: )
I should probably get swatchin... (But I really want to read that Yarn Harlot book.)

The Mammy Mystery is Solved..
I just got off the phone with my Mammy.. (She's dad's mom) so that I could ask her about these catalog pictures that my dad gave to me from her.

Apparently the main idea is that she wants me to knit something for Aunt Faye's birthday.. which is the day after Thanksgiving. She is sending me yarn money in the mail and she basically said "Just knit her somethin fun"...
Oh I can do that...
Aunt Faye is a character... she's got red curly hair and she wears "loud" clothing for a woman of her age.. She doesn't really fit in with her sisters in that way.. but she fits in somehow with them and their crazyness... But she's the craziest. And those catalog pictures are just not crazy enough for her. (Well the hat and scarf *could* be if the right yarns were employed.. but eh. Boring.)
Knowing all this makes me think of all the possibilities that I would never get to knit otherwise.. "Somethin fun"
Indeed.
Going yarn shopping with her lets me get inside her brain as to what she likes and doesn't like.. we go through the magazines and look for things we like, but most of the time we just find things we laugh at. Her and I nearly fell over laughing at this huge, thick scarf that was made out of multiple colors of yarn and had pom-poms as big as basketballs..Yes.. I said pom-pom
s.. as in.. many. That was so hillarious.. and it would have made great
YKW?! fodder.
But anyhow.. I surfed knitpicks for about five minutes and I already have a project in mind... Whether I will be able to make it or not depends on what amount of money she sends me. I know that knitpicks is the answer though because I can't very well go yarn shopping in person with Aunt Faye to buy yarn for a gift FOR HER. lol.
All of this mysterious knitting is getting really weird for me.. I'm glad I atleast feel comfortable talking about this project... I don't believe that Aunt Faye ever reads this... and if she does she doesn't tell me about it.
So if you see me knitting something *weird* looking... you'll know what it is and who it's for ; )
Oh.. and the MMGP is going well. And that is all I am at liberty to say.

The Melanie Mystery Gift Project..
I've gotten the yarn.. I've decided on the pattern.. I've even started and I have about 7 inches done.. but I haven't told yall a darn thing about it!
And.. It's driving me crazy.
So.. Without ferther adue..
The yarn:

It's Plymouth's Dreambaby DK.. and it's so soft.. you just wouldn't believe it... I love knitting with microfiber.. it's just wonderusly wondeful.
I'm a little nervous about the color.. Mel said she wanted "light aqua".. which is harder to find than you'd imagine.. especially durring fall.. but I think I did pretty good.. Plymouth calls that color "Spearmint". I keep going back n forth mentally.. "Is this really the right color? Is it too green?" "Oh this is definitely the right color.. I shouldn't worry at all! She is goin to love it!" "...Well in this light it really does look green.. Green is bad.. she doesn't want green.. she wants AQUA.. and this is green." And so on.. and so on.
Thus is the way my mind works.
The pattern I decided on isn't a boring flat scarf pattern.. I'm really quite fond of the way it's working out.. It is the "Here and There Cables" scarf from Scarf Style. The one thing I don't like is that if I'm not careful I lose my place.. and something wacky happens.... That happened to me last night.. I lost about 3 inches of work.. Rrrrip!!
But I think it's going well... when I end up finishing the first ball of yarn I will measure the lenght of scarf I have and then multiply that by 6... if that ending measurement is insanely long.. Mel will also get a matching hat to go with her scarf.. (Which.. she has no idea about at all.. I didn't even intend on making a hat.. but this yarn seems to be lasting a long time!)
I'm real glad I picked up those new cable needles at the yarn shop.. Handily enough.. on the cable row I can stick the needle in my ring and it stays there till I need it... This cuts down on "Now where did I put that cable needle.. it was RIGHT HERE.. I just sat it down 6 sts ago!!" quite a bit. If I work on this scarf at work.. my cable needle will live in my ring the entire time... I cannot lose that cable needle!
Well.. I better go work on some school work... Stupid school.. cutting in on my knitting time. Grr.

The New Yarns 2 Ewe..
Well today was quite eventful.. and it's not even over yet!
Oh the things I have seen today.. the yarns I've petted.. the needles I've lusted for.. the money I wish I had to spend..
It's all just too much!
I've gotten so many ideas today.. one main one is another sweater I want for myself... I love the way it looks.. We (Aunt Faye) were looking through the knitting mags and I ran across this yarn ad with a sweater I just *had* to have.. so I wrote down all the info I could about it and tried to find it on the internet..
..Thankfully.. the internet is good..

This is the Traveling Cables Cardigan (Pattern available at Yarnmarket.com)It doesn't look quite as good in this picture as it did on the advertisement.. (I think cause the model was smaller.. and so it looked better on her.. but since I am tiny myself.. I am not put off.)
It's a lofty goal.. I am well aware.. and I don't even know if I have the skills to pull off something that complicated.. but I sure do love the pattern.. I could see it in a jewel toned yarn.. maybe burgundy or a deep turquoise.. (I know.. not blue!! Shocker!)
So.. that's a long term goal for me.. I really love that sweater... I don't know what it is.. but I just do.. I especially love the back and how the cables make the shaping..
But back to the point..
Yarns 2 Ewe in Houston has moved locations... It seems to be a little easier to get to.. with slightly better parking.. I think they're still trying to get settled.. I hope they put things in their windows again. When we got there we blew straight past the store cause the building does not look like a knitting shop.. all of the windows were covered in white miniblinds and the sign didn't stand out much until we past it..
But once you open those doors.... it's like coming home.. Knowing you're in the right place... an "Ahhh...." moment.
I've noticed they have more things.. they have more gadgets.. (I got some new cable needles..) They also seem to have more yarn.. I almost got some bamboo yarn but the gauge was a little too fine.
The yarn for the Melanie mystery gift project (MMGP?) has been aquired.. It is *So* soft.. and the perfect color.. I do so wish I could post pictures.. but I'll save the pictures and post them after she has recieved the MMGP.
Well.. I could post the cable needles..
They're fun.

I thought they'd be helpful.. I think they will be.
There was something else I saw that I was totally amazed with...
..Have you ever knitted with Glass?
I haven't.. but I don't know if I want to..
But there is a way... A very interesting way.. A company named
Namaste makes glass knitting needles.. (Well really.. they're made of Pyrex.)
I think of these in the same way I thought of Cinderella's shoes when I was a child.. They're beautiful.. they're unique.. but are they
practical? I don't know.. and I couldn't tell you..
What I can tell you is that they are totally impractical budget wise.. The cheapest ones they had were 30 dollars.. for size 8s. Right now this is totally far out there.. totally and way.. far.. out there.
But they sure are purty. And to be honest.. I'd love to try them.. if only to say "Yep.. I've knitted with glass." I think I'd like how smooth they are.. They seemed to be really nice.
..but.. They do have a SERIOUS warning on them.. lol! Something akin to "In buying these needles you release Namaste for any responsibility. Keep out of the reach of children."
..It went on longer than that.. but you get the idea.. I don't know if I want to be warned that sternly for something I'll be spending so much time with.
But the fantasy is nice.. and just as I will never wear glass slippers.. I probably will never knit with glass needles..
But it sure is nice of them to give a lifetime garuntee.
I hope to see Yarns 2 Ewe get more comfortable in their new place.. They're very nice people and I really enjoy their store.
And they give me an excuse to get to see my Aunt Faye : ) Anything that does that is worth while.

Finnally Knitted Today..
I don't remember the last day I actually got to knit.. but today I did! Yay!!
And there is a picture... Don't yall love pictures?

I have the body completely done... and now I've started my first sleeve.. I remember the sleeves feeling like they take a *really* long time.. All that ribbing makes you feel like you're not really getting anywhere..
I kept meaning to have "knitting days" over the weekend... but it just didn't happen.. Every time that I intended to knit.. something would happen... We went out to eat... we went shopping.. but we didn't knit.
Tomarrow I'm going to split the day into knitting and school and see where that leads me... I seem to stick to one thing or another.. but I think doing both might actually work... maybe.... possibly... We shall see.
I really need to call my Aunt Faye... I want to ask her if she wants to go yarn shopping... I need to go shop for yarn for Melanie's scarf.. That should be fun... She was so bummed out that I wouldn't spend any money the last time we went.. Maybe I'll call her tomarrow... I think I will.
Woo yarn shopping!!
Hehe.
I really don't know what kind of yarn I want to get her... I know I want very soft... and I know what color.. but other than that I'm at a total loss. Atleast I decided what pattern I'm using... (The only hint I'm comfortable giving is that it's from the book Scarf Style. If you want to know I will tell you privately... but shhh... it's a secret.)
Something I've been thinking about lately... I really do like
that bag I got from Dove... it is working out PERFECTLY for my Ribby.. and it makes taking knitting to work and elsewhere a total joy... I can't help but wonder if anyone else has gotten their's since I posted on KR about it.. I hope they did : )
So... um....... I'm not really sure what else to tell... There is a mystery brewing with my Mammy (Translation: My dad's mom) though... She gave my dad a page out of a catalog.. and she wants to see if I can knit whatever it is.. She didn't want to pay that much for the mystery item.. but I don't know if I can knit it because I haven't seen it or heard anything about it besides that... I told my dad he should just scan it and email it to me.. I also don't know who the mystery item is for.. Dad said she wants it to be a gift... I hope it's for someone I know and care about.. (If I can knit it that is.) I don't know how I'll feel about it at all.. It really is a mystery.
And we shall uncover this mystery..... eventually.
Stay tuned : P

Oooo.. Sparkley Things..
I got a gift in the mail today.... I love gifts : )

...And inside:

My aunt made me these... I saw an instruction site for them and I emailed her because I know she's really into beads and beading.. so I asked if she could make them and she did! And she even found that cute sheep!
I haven't used them yet.. but I think they're really cute and they should work pretty well. The smaller rings seem to be able to fit up to a 10.5 needle.. but possibly a 10. I don't know how big I can get the larger ones on... but I haven't knitted bulky in quite a while.
I think I'll replace the markers on my ribby with those when I pick it up again.. Oooo.. fancy knit jewlery.. It's just nifty ain't it!
..And she said if I can find more rings... she will make more >: )

Long Awaited Ribby2 Update..
I finally got a break from my school work to knit a little bit on my Ribby2 and actually post a progress report on it..

It looks a bit strange and I know the picture is terrible.. I find it difficult to pose that oddly shaped thing... and even harder to fit the entire thing in the picture. lol.
I have the "fronts" on stitch holders and I'm working on the arm hole decreases on the back. I thought this method was a good idea. We'll see if that continues to be the case.
I really think I'll enjoy the mostly seamless construction when it's all said and done.. but it does create some problems (like those I've already mentioned.) especially when I travel with it.
The pieces were much more portable..
But I do so hate those seams.
So I'm moving right along on it.... Maybe I'll be done by the time we get a good solid cold front.
I also completed the edging on my Voli.. I think I like it a lot better than it was... it really did cut down on most of the rolling.. but it didn't interrupt any of the straight lines.
My mom doesn't like the neckline on me.. she thinks it's too high.. and really.. to be honest.. I agree with her.. but I'm hoping it'll get deeper with washing and wearing it.. I've heard things about shine draping more and weighing itself down. We shall see.
I still haven't made the swatch for the vinegar test.. but as I said I've been workin my lil bum off on school lately... Everything got delayed because of the hurricane.. and then I played a mean game of procrastination.
...I seem to enjoy that game.. until it really matters.
In other knitting news.... Brad is knitting... I know.. weird isn't it. He actually isn't doing badly.. but for some reason we keep getting into an argument when he mentions that knitting doesn't take any skill and he thinks he should automatically get perfect, smooth, flawless stockinette stitch in a few days. I keep telling him it takes time... but he doesn't want to believe that. He wants to believe that it's simple and that any schmo could do it.
I think he's slowly learning otherwise.
I do enjoy that he's knitting though... He's putting the wool yarn I ended up with to good use. I can't knit with that stuff.. it murders my hands. I itch just thinking about it.
I hope to post another Ribby2 update before another month goes by. I am shocked that I waited an entire month to update about it.. but I guess it's because of the Voli. lol.
